Meet Jono Mason

FOUNDER + PRESIDENT

Jono grew up in Lake Wanaka, New Zealand. He came to the US in 2000 for a ski season in Aspen which was a turning point when, at a private dinner, he met a Master Sommelier and started firing off questions. How wine was made? How does it age? Why can it taste different from one bottle to the next? It was clear. Jono caught the wine bug.

When life (and love) brought him to Alabama, he broke out into the wine industry, starting at Grassroots Wine: a wholesaler specializing in family-owned wineries that put terroir first. It was where Jono learned what makes a wine truly memorable (hint: it’s not the label).

After a decade there, he joined Pinnacle Imports. He helped shape the portfolio to ensure that the best wine available in the U.S. were accessible in Alabama. Another decade passed and Jono decided it was time to bring his own vision to life.

Balance Wine got its name for two reasons.

First, balance is something most great winemakers strive for. This balance lies between the fruit, acidity, alcohol, and sugars. When it’s struck, a compelling wine emerges.

Balance is also a reference to the vital component in each of our lives. In this busy world, you still need to find the balance of work and enjoying time surrounded by your friends and loved ones. And of course, taking time to share a good glass of wine with good people is the perfect way to put balance back in your life.
